Students returning to class in Fort Smith, Inuvik continue learning online

A new health order will allow students in Fort Smith and Inuvik to return to class on Monday.

However, the Beaufort Delta Education Council posted in a notice on Facebook that students in Inuvik will continue to learn online until at least February 7.

Paul William Kaeser High School in Fort Smith posted on Facebook Jan. 27 that students would return to class on Monday unless they posted otherwise.

The health order will come into effect at 5 p.m. on January 30.

Acting Chief Public Health Officer André Corriveau announced the changes in a press release late Friday evening.

They replace the current temporary gathering restrictions, put in place on January 4, which are due to expire at 5 p.m. on January 31.

Under the new order, Inuvik and Fort Smith employees are also encouraged to return to work.

Household gatherings in the NWT will continue to be limited to 10 people with a maximum of five non-household people.

Restaurants, bars and lounges will no longer have to restrict the number of people at a table, but mixing guests from different tables will not be allowed.

The announcement also said that most apps previously approved for high-risk activities such as indoor team sports, swimming and hand games will be reinstated.
