Open Learning Environment (OLE) Course

How do OLE units work?

Our OLE units have two versions: a two-credit version and a zero-credit version, which are offered completely online. The non-credit-point version can be completed at your convenience, while two credit-point OLE units are run during the semester.

All students and staff can take as many OLE units for free without a credit point, with online resources and learning activities freely available.

Please see the Interdisciplinary Studies Handbook for when each two credit point unit is available and register via student from sydney.

OLET1101: Aboriginal Sydney

This unit explores Indigenous experiences and stories in Sydney that are often invisible to non-Indigenous people. Sydney is a city rich in diverse pre-colonial, colonial and contemporary sites of significance to Indigenous peoples.

Too often, however, perceptions of Indigenous peoples cast them back into the past or perpetuate stereotypical ideas that Indigenous peoples live primarily in remote communities.

OLET1103: Cultural competence: fundamentals

This unit encourages you to discover who you are and how you fit into the world around you. It is intended to serve as a starting point on your journey towards respecting diversity and encouraging open and inclusive behavior.

The unit will examine the meaning of culture and cultural competence, and examine social and emotional well-being in the context of cultural competence as well as identity formation, worldview and socialization.

It will address the importance of building cultural competency capacities to recognize and challenge racism. The unit helps you explore the implications of being part of an academic community located on Indigenous lands.
