Changing the role of the teacher in an online learning environment



There are around 1 crore of teachers in India, 70% of whom work in public schools. According to government data, the nationwide student-teacher ratio for primary schools is 23: 1, for upper primary schools is 25: 1, and for secondary level is 26: 1. At first glance, we appear to have addressed the issue of access to education – including school infrastructure and teacher availability, which has resulted in improved enrollment. However, annual state of education surveys highlight the gap in student performance at school level.

The role of a teacher in improving academic performance cannot be overstated. Of the remaining 81 percent, 42.6 percent of the teacher’s time is spent on non-teaching activities, 31.8 percent on non-teaching school activities, and 6.5 percent on other departmental activities. .
