Accessible Weekly Learning Activities: Manatees, Covid Dreams, and Pinball

Every Wednesday, we spotlight five student activities that support a wide range of learners. In this week’s roundup of accessible activities, we invite students to learn more about manatees in Florida, reflect on their dream life, analyze a picture of home and work, watch a movie about youth culture and understanding what is happening in a photo.

1. Learn about the rapidly declining manatee population.

In this Lesson of the day, students will learn about manatees in Florida, a population that declined 10% last year. Then, they will make a poster to educate the public about the current crisis.

2. Share your pandemic dreams.

The Times illustrated the “Covid dreams” of several Twitter users in a recent article. In this Student opinion quickly, students share what they’re dreaming of now – and whether they’ve noticed a change in the types of dreams they had during the pandemic. They can write a journal about their dreams and what they think they might mean, or share in the comments section with students around the world.

3. Interpret an image.

This Image prompt ask students to look closely at a picture and think about what it might say about society or current events. Students can share their observations and if they personally relate to the image in any way, in the comments section.

4. Watch a movie about a popular arcade game.

This Movie club presents a two-minute film about a time when pinball was banned because adults feared it would corrupt young people. After watching the film, students will determine if fears about youth culture are exaggerated.

5. Analyze a photograph.

In this What is happening in this picture, students will view an image from the New York Times with the caption removed. Students use analytical skills to determine the context of the photograph and may react to observations of other students in the comments section.
